3 Day Quote Challenge #2 – The Dark Knight

I took Gotham’s white knight and I brought him down to our level. It wasn’t hard. You see, madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push!

Everyone is familiar with Heath Ledger‘s insane performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight and, whatever your thoughts might be on Joker’s personality attributes, everyone adores it. Because it’s brilliant. There’s not much to be picked on in this.
Ledger managed to make Joker his bitch and create something extraordinary. This guy is absolutely nuts and so bad it’s good. Great. You may even find yourself rooting for him and don’t feel bad about that,  you’re not alone.

I’m a firm believer in the “each film is only as good as its villain” (Roger Ebert said that, you live and you learn) approach, each story really,  because, you see, heroes, they’re all the same. Might it be about justice, kindness or pure sense of duty, good is their agenda. They’re there to fight bad people. But, villains aren’t necessarily there to fight good people, you know what I mean? Their agenda can come in all colors of the rainbow and then some, they’re not a consequence, they’re a cause. Heroes exist because there are villains. Villains simply exist.

There’s extraordinary power in that, the invention of a villain. There’s a lot of fun to be had coming up with a strong one. Exploring the bad side of an audience can be quite tricky, but the reward is remarkable. I’m a big fan of the likable type of villain, the ones you know are terrible people but you kind of wouldn’t mind hanging out with them or at least meeting them or even be them, but not really, because they’re bad, and you don’t actually want to murder people or submit mankind to your crazy wishes, right?
